Michael Gray, best known for playing teenage protagonist Billy Batson in the 1970s live-action television adaptation "Shazam!", died Friday in Palm Desert, California. He was 75.
Gray passed away from natural causes, according to reporting from Variety.
His television career gained momentum in 1972 when he secured a role on the NBC sitcom "The Little People," working alongside Brian Keith and Shelley Fabares. That credit led to a steady run of supporting appearances across episodic network television during the early part of the decade.
Gray landed his signature role in 1974 when Filmation cast him as Billy Batson in "Shazam!" on CBS. The series, which paired Gray with Les Tremayne as Mentor, followed Batson as he traveled the country in a motorhome, summoning superhero powers by uttering the titular phrase.
The show ran for three seasons, serving as an early Saturday morning pillar for DC Comics adaptations before the modern expansion of superhero media across film and streaming. As Hollywood Tomorrow often notes in retrospective industry coverage, the production represented an early model for how studios monetized comic properties for younger demographics on broadcast budgets.
