White House special envoy Steve Witkoff convened unannounced talks in Sardinia last weekend with top United Arab Emirates official Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed al Nahyan to map out next steps regarding Iran, according to reporting from Axios.
The quiet Mediterranean meeting took place as Washington intensifies efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz for commercial oil transit while escalating its economic squeeze on Tehran. Two sources familiar with the discussions confirmed the high-level encounter to Axios.
Sheikh Tahnoon, widely known as TBZ, serves as the UAE national security adviser and deputy ruler of Abu Dhabi. As the brother of UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed, he also oversees the Emirates' vast sovereign investment vehicles and expanding international technology portfolios.
The diplomatic session followed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's rollout of "Operation Economic Outcast," a sweeping campaign designed to penalize international entities conducting commerce with the Islamic Republic. Bessent spoke with Sheikh Tahnoon prior to unveiling the measure, according to a source cited by Axios.
On the same day Witkoff and Sheikh Tahnoon conferred, the U.S. Treasury Department moved to sever the UAE branches of Egypt's Banque Misr from the American financial system, signaling aggressive enforcement across regional financial hubs.
For international media and tech conglomerates that frequently partner with Gulf sovereign wealth, Abu Dhabi remains a pivotal nexus of global capital. Tightening sanctions enforcement and maritime security operations will require multinational commercial ventures in the region to monitor compliance requirements closely as Washington ramps up regional pressure.
The White House did not respond to requests for comment regarding the Sardinia summit.
