Longtime *Wheel of Fortune* announcer Jim Thornton has been placed on suspension following revelations that he accessed a controversial online chat room during a commercial flight.
The disciplinary action came on Tuesday after imagery obtained by TMZ surfaced, showing Thornton browsing a platform called lifeline.chat. The website reportedly serves as a message board for individuals with pedophilic ideation, containing disturbing posts referencing minors.
Thornton has maintained through counsel that the visit was an accidental search result. His attorney, Allison Hart, told TMZ that Thornton was attempting to access the crisis support portal 988lifeline.org, explaining that he became an active advocate after losing a close family member to suicide two years ago.
According to a statement from Hart, the chat forum visited is not unlawful and contains no child pornography. Hart stated that Thornton never viewed, downloaded, or consumed illicit material on the May flight or at any other time, adding that the announcer exited the site as soon as its true nature became apparent.
Timestamps from the documented photos show the site was accessed on Thornton's device for at least 57 minutes. The mid-air incident prompted airport police to meet Thornton at his arrival gate, though authorities made no arrests and filed no criminal charges.
## Broadcast Scrutiny
The immediate suspension reflects standard risk-mitigation protocol for syndicated legacy programming. For multi-decade broadcast fixtures like *Wheel of Fortune*, studio producers and distributors routinely act quickly to distance on-air talent from reputational controversies while internal reviews take place.
