Organizers of the Venice International Film Festival have quickly abandoned plans to drop the traditional opening-day jury press conference, confirming to TheWrap that the panel will take place Wednesday as typically expected.
The abrupt reversal followed widespread blowback after Deadline first reported that the event had been quietly removed from the official schedule. Venice, alongside major European festival peers Cannes and Berlin, historically begins its main competition by allowing accredited media to question the jury evaluating the lineup.
## Mounting Festival Scrutiny
The initial decision to skip the media panel drew heightened scrutiny amid political friction leading up to the festival. An open letter organized by the activist group Venice4Palestine gathered more than 200 signatures from notable industry figures, including actors Guy Pearce and Alia Shawkat, filmmaker Céline Sciamma, and directors Arab and Tarzan Nasser.
The appeal called on festival leadership to elevate Palestinian perspectives, display the Palestinian flag alongside those of other participating nations, and suspend formal relationships with institutions linked to the Israeli government. The activist collective also scheduled a Tuesday gathering on the Lido titled "Yet Gaza Continues to Burn."
This year's competition jury is led by chair Maggie Gyllenhaal. The panel of jurors includes filmmakers Kaouther Ben Hania, Xavier Giannoli, Shahrbanoo Sadat, and Johnnie To, joined by musician Daniel Blumberg and film scholar Francesco Casetti.
## The Festival Calculus
Major international film festivals are finding it nearly impossible to insulate their programming from global political tensions. For Venice organizers, attempting to bypass potentially contentious questions from the press corps backfired almost immediately, creating a public relations headache that forced a swift operational retreat on the eve of the festival.
