The United States is actively exploring potential winter de-escalation steps between Ukraine and Russia to lay the groundwork for renewed peace talks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Axios in an interview published Monday.
The diplomatic push follows high-level meetings over the weekend involving Trump administration envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The representatives traveled to Kyiv on Sunday for their first official visit to Ukraine since Donald Trump began his second term, directly following a three-hour session with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Saturday.
According to Zelensky, the American delegation reported that Russian officials are open to discussions. While Zelensky expressed caution regarding Moscow's true intent due to sustained Russian military operations, he noted that Putin appears ready to evaluate concepts for moving negotiations forward.
Zelensky suggested that Putin is wary of alienating Washington ahead of upcoming U.S. midterm elections. "My feeling [is] that Putin needs Trump," Zelensky told Axios, noting that the Russian leader "doesn't want ... to upset him" and might aim to hand the administration a diplomatic victory.
