The Tokyo International Film Festival is expanding its official programming architecture with new competitive honors for domestic releases, an expanded regional showcase, and a dedicated award recognizing women in cinema.
According to reporting by Variety, the festival's Nippon Cinema Now strand will transition into an active competitive section. The category will hand out a Best Film award alongside a Special Jury Prize, evaluated by an assembled panel of Japanese and overseas industry professionals.
Organizers are also rolling out Crosscut Asia+, a curated section focused on cinema across Southeast Asia designed to build deeper ties between Japan and neighboring film markets.
Alongside the regional expansions, the festival is introducing a standalone honor created to celebrate female filmmakers, reflecting broader industry efforts to address gender representation across the international festival circuit.
The strategic additions come as Tokyo continues working to sharpen its industry profile against regional competitors like the Busan International Film Festival. By formalizing competition tiers for local talent and widening its regional focus, the festival aims to enhance its relevance for international programmers, distributors and co-production partners.
