Tim Robbins has countered producer Jerry Bruckheimer's assertion that the actor declined an invitation to return for *Top Gun: Maverick*. Speaking on the *Happy Sad Confused* podcast with Josh Horowitz, as reported by TheWrap, the Oscar-winning actor stated he was never contacted about reprising his role as flight officer Merlin in the 2022 sequel.

The remarks address previous commentary from Bruckheimer indicating that Robbins had passed on participating in the film. Robbins explained that while he maintains a friendly rapport with the veteran producer, having occasionally joined Bruckheimer's recreational hockey games in Los Angeles, no direct proposal was ever extended to him.

Robbins allowed for the possibility of a miscommunication among his representatives, speculating that his agents might have rebuffed inquiries without consulting him directly. He suggested his team might have assumed he had no appetite for revisiting the 1986 action property, though he made clear that was not necessarily the case.

Robbins praised the completed picture and highlighted his enduring regard for star Tom Cruise. Because of that positive impression, Robbins noted that he might have agreed to a cameo appearance had the opportunity reached him.

Legacy sequels frequently navigate complicated talent dynamics, where agency gatekeeping and casual preliminary inquiries can yield conflicting public accounts years later. With Paramount Pictures executives Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein confirming at CinemaCon that *Top Gun 3* is in active development, interest in the surviving members of the original ensemble continues to surface.
