Sony is turning the PlayStation 5 into a free streaming hub, launching an ad-supported linear television service across the United States. The offering provides access to more than 100 linear channels spanning feature films, scripted television, sports, and live news.
To access the programming, users only need to log in with an active PlayStation account, without any recurring subscription fees. While specific advertising partners have not yet been disclosed, Sony has indicated plans to expand the service into Canada down the line, according to GamesBeat.
The catalog pulls content from several studio libraries and digital networks. Movie options include Lionsgate's MovieSphere, 50 Cent Action, Cinevault, FilmRise Free Movies, and Sony One Horror Hits. On the episodic side, the platform features dedicated single-series channels for "Community," "The Walking Dead," and "Forensic Files," paired with sports coverage from Fox Sports, NASCAR, and NBC Sports Now.
## Monetizing Console Screen Time
Speaking to Variety regarding the strategy, Peter Wood, executive vice president of consumer platforms and services at Sony Pictures Entertainment, highlighted the unique viewing habits of console owners. Wood explained that gaming audiences frequently consume video on their primary hardware rather than migrating to standard smart TV interfaces, adding that Sony aims to eliminate friction across disparate media formats, as cited by GamesBeat.
The rollout reflects the broader entertainment industry's aggressive push into free ad-supported streaming television, or FAST. As subscription streaming faces rising churn and customer price sensitivity, hardware manufacturers and media companies are turning to linear FAST channels to unlock high-margin ad inventory from engaged, cord-cutting audiences.
