Cameron retains an unprecedented hold on the top tier of historical revenue. His 2009 original Avatar and its 2022 sequel Avatar: The Way of Water currently rank as the first and third highest-grossing films ever released globally.

For studio distribution chiefs, the heavy concentration of speculative fiction at the top of the box office ledger illustrates the worldwide commercial power of visual spectacle. High-concept sci-fi worldbuilding remains uniquely capable of cutting across diverse international territories and driving premium-format ticket sales.

Even as Cameron's recent epics command historic sums, Polygon noted that the director's commercial high-water marks do not necessarily represent his ultimate critical peak within the action sci-fi genre over the past three and a half decades.
