Two decades after stepping away from the character, Sacha Baron Cohen has returned to the satirical persona that launched his international career, bringing "Ali G: Who Iz I?" to cinemas ahead of an Amazon Prime debut on October 30.
During promotion for the new release, the comedian reflected on his past encounters with prominent political figures, notably Donald Trump, whom Cohen interviewed in character during the early 2000s. Speaking to Variety, Cohen remarked that Trump possesses "elements of brilliance" and added that critics "were too easy to dismiss him as a nincompoop."
Cohen first established the suburban London hip-hop parody on British television before expanding the format into "Da Ali G Show" at the turn of the century. The series served as the launching pad for subsequent characters, including Borat Sagdiyev and Brüno Gehard, which went on to generate major box office returns for studio partners.
Cohen's reappraisal points to the shifting dynamics between political figures and comedy platforms, where unconventional media appearances frequently bolster political branding. For Hollywood Tomorrow, the revival also illustrates Amazon's ongoing strategy of utilizing established, nostalgic intellectual property to drive digital viewership following limited theatrical previews.
"Ali G: Who Iz I?" is currently in theaters and will premiere globally on Amazon Prime on October 30.
