Mobile game maker Rovio Entertainment has shuttered its Copenhagen development studio after deciding to pull the plug on its unreleased title Sonic Blitz, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz.

The Denmark-based outpost had been focused on developing the mobile project, which was positioned to utilize Sega's flagship franchise. Sega completed its acquisition of Rovio in 2023 for approximately $775 million, aiming to adapt its console and PC intellectual property into high-performing mobile experiences.

Sonic Blitz stood as one of the primary collaborative efforts under that corporate alignment. The decision to scrap the game entirely rather than retool it suggests the title fell short of internal performance and monetization benchmarks during development.

The studio closure underscores the tightening discipline across the broader mobile gaming market. With customer acquisition costs remaining high and player retention challenging, major publishers are demonstrating little patience for projects that do not show immediate commercial viability.

Rovio has not publicly detailed the final headcount impacted by the Copenhagen closure, nor has the publisher indicated whether affected personnel will be offered opportunities across its remaining development offices.
