Romania Selects Cristian Mungiu's Fjord for Oscar Submission

Romania has officially selected Cristian Mungiu's drama *Fjord* as its contender for the Best International Feature Film category at the upcoming Academy Awards, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.

The feature stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as deeply religious Romanian parents who relocate to a rural Norwegian village. The narrative tracks the cultural friction and legal fallout after the couple faces allegations of child abuse from local authorities.

## Star Power and Arthouse Credentials

Mungiu, a previous Palme d'Or recipient, brings significant European festival cachet to the submission. The project pairs the auteur with recognizable international talent, uniting Romanian-American actor Stan with Norwegian breakout Reinsve.

The casting dynamic offers the Romanian entry an unusual degree of cross-border appeal compared to standard regional submissions. Stan's established footprint in American film alongside Reinsve's arthouse standing provides an immediate promotional hook for Academy voters.

## Why It Matters

The international feature race is notoriously crowded, often drawing more than 80 national submissions each year. Securing an entry with both an established festival director and recognizable bilingual leads gives Romania a distinct promotional advantage in making the initial 15-film shortlist.

Romania's campaign will now shift toward securing North American distribution and qualifying screenings in Los Angeles and New York ahead of the Academy's preliminary voting window.
