ReedPop and Penny Arcade are expanding their live-event footprint with the launch of PAX Unplugged Houston, slated to premiere in June 2027, according to reporting by GamesIndustry.biz.
The convention marks the first Texas-based gathering under the PAX banner since organizers retired PAX South in San Antonio. Organizers framed the Houston debut as a direct re-entry into the region, telling GamesIndustry.biz that "it's a chance to bring PAX back to the PAX South fans that missed us."
## Expanding Tabletop Footprint
Unlike the flagship video game conventions held in Seattle and Boston, the Unplugged brand is tailored strictly around board games, card games, miniatures and tabletop role-playing titles. The original PAX Unplugged launched in Philadelphia, carving out a dedicated audience separate from digital interactive entertainment expos.
The decision to plant a flag in Houston comes as live event operators continue recalibrating after years of post-pandemic disruption. Convention producers face higher venue logistics costs and evolving publisher marketing budgets, leading organizers to rely on targeted enthusiast verticals with high consumer loyalty.
By establishing a second Unplugged destination, ReedPop and Penny Arcade are betting that regional tabletop communities can sustain a multi-day convention without requiring the massive corporate presence common to general gaming expos.
