Director Theo Rollason has launched his feature directorial debut, *Queer Edward II*, at the Venice Film Festival, backed by high-profile executive producers Tilda Swinton and Sandy Powell.

The documentary looks back at the making of Derek Jarman's landmark 1991 historical drama *Edward II*. Rollason's film delves into the archival reality of the shoot while tracking the broader political climate and social backlash that met the production during an era of heightened institutional hostility toward the LGBTQ+ community.

Rollason emphasized that the documentary is aimed at both historical documentation and modern resonance. "I hope the film can function not simply as a snapshot of a historical moment, but as a reminder of what collective resistance can look like - and what role art has to play," the director told The Hollywood Reporter.

## Deep Ties to Jarman's Original Work

The involvement of Swinton and Powell gives the documentary direct lineage to Jarman's original set. Swinton starred as Queen Isabella in the 1991 adaptation of Christopher Marlowe's play, a performance that earned her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at Venice that year. Powell, a three-time Academy Award winner, designed the film's anachronistic costumes.

Retrospectives focusing on the British New Queer Cinema movement continue to find curated space across the European festival circuit. Jarman, who passed away in 1994, remains one of British cinema's most influential avant-garde figures, making behind-the-scenes accounts of his guerrilla production methods prized assets for specialty distributors and archival programmers.

The Venice bow provides Rollason with an international launchpad as the project seeks festival momentum and distribution partnerships across key global arthouse territories.
