New Zealand-based studio Origame Digital is advancing its next video game project, Penguin Colony, designed to challenge conventional narrative approaches within interactive entertainment, Polygon reports.
The title serves as an adaptation and subversion of H.P. Lovecraft's classic 1936 novella, At the Mountains of Madness. Rather than adopting typical cosmic horror viewpoints, the narrative reframes the Antarctic expedition setting through the perspective of the region's indigenous inhabitants.
Lead developer Tali Faulkner, a Māori creator who previously directed the award-winning photography game Umurangi Generation, is using the project to examine historical trauma. Faulkner stated to Polygon that the creatures and tensions in Penguin Colony reflect real-world atrocities rather than conventional fictional threats.
## Reframing Genre Tropes
The production marks a deliberate tonal shift toward psychological horror for Origame Digital. By upending Lovecraft's established literary frameworks, Faulkner aims to deliver an explicit critique of colonial history through atmospheric gameplay systems.
The project arrives amid broader discussions across interactive entertainment regarding narrative ownership and genre deconstruction. Hollywood Tomorrow notes that independent creators are increasingly utilizing high-concept literary subversions to differentiate niche releases in an intensely crowded digital distribution market.
Origame Digital has not yet announced confirmed platform availability or a release window for Penguin Colony.
