Netflix is moving forward with a new episodic adaptation of Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel *Lonesome Dove*, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The project is being adapted by Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart, who previously teamed up for Netflix's limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck's *East of Eden*.

McMurtry's 1985 book was famously adapted into a four-part CBS miniseries in 1989 starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones. That production drew massive ratings, earned critical acclaim, and revived the broadcast Western format for a modern television audience.

## Western IP in High Demand

The move marks another major bet by a streaming platform on foundational American literary IP. High-end Westerns and frontier epics have seen renewed commercial viability across the industry in recent years, prompting platforms to search for established titles with multi-generational appeal.

For Netflix, tackling *Lonesome Dove* represents a direct effort to capture prestige drama viewership with recognizable legacy IP, while relying on the proven creative partnership of Kazan and Stuart to modernize the material for global audiences.
