Mariska Hargitay is expanding her creative footprint far beyond procedural television, balancing major documentary work and live stage appearances alongside her long-running small-screen commitments.

The veteran performer is set to host the Emmy Awards on Sept. 14, where she also contends as a nominee for directing and producing the HBO documentary "My Mom Jayne." The non-fiction project explores the personal and professional legacy of her mother, actor Jayne Mansfield.

Production on the documentary commenced in 2023, requiring Hargitay to juggle filming duties simultaneously with the demanding shoot schedule of "Law and Order: SVU."

Reflecting on the intense multi-project workload during an interview with Variety on Instagram, Hargitay noted, "I don't even know how I did it."

The Emmy recognition follows another notable creative departure earlier this year, when the 62-year-old actor completed her Broadway debut starring in the solo production "Every Brilliant Thing."

For high-profile network television stars who spend decades tethered to a single franchise, pivoting toward prestige non-fiction filmmaking and live theater represents a calculated repositioning. It allows established talent to build independent producing equity and critical cachet while maintaining their commercial television base.
