Hardware maker Lexar is set to introduce one of the thinnest external solid-state drives on the market. Dubbed the Lexar Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD, the device measures under four millimeters at its thickest point, according to reporting from The Verge.

Scheduled to roll out later this year, the drive will be sold in 512GB and 1TB configurations. Lexar achieved the extreme profile by removing traditional USB-C port housing, adopting a design strategy previously seen from niche peripheral makers such as Xteink.

## Form Factor Trade-Offs

The pursuit of razor-thin storage hardware requires structural compromises. By dispensing with standard port enclosures, the Muse trades conventional physical connector durability for a footprint that slips easily into pockets or mobile gear rigs.

Lexar has not yet disclosed detailed transfer speeds, exact millimeter specifications or retail pricing ahead of the planned release window.

## Why It Matters

For mobile creators, field producers and camera crews, lightweight high-speed backup solutions are a constant requirement on location. However, ultra-compact form factors frequently face scrutiny regarding heat dissipation and interface longevity under sustained production workloads.
