South Korean entertainment studio Showbox is making a direct push into bite-sized episodic storytelling with the launch of Showbite, a dedicated microdrama label, Variety reported.
The newly formed banner will begin releasing original short-form programming in September, setting its sights on international distribution across vertical and mobile-first formats.
Showbite is prepping a slate spanning multiple genres. According to Variety, the production pipeline covers romance, revenge stories, comedies, period dramas, fantasy, mysteries, horror, and action-thrillers.
Among the initial projects detailed on the slate is "Taste of You," an enemies-to-lovers romance in the popular boys' love (BL) subgenre, set against the culinary world.
Microdramas have evolved rapidly from niche digital novelties in East Asia into a highly profitable media segment. Major entertainment houses are increasingly moving into the space to capture younger mobile demographics who consume vertical video serialized in minute-long installments.
For Showbox, established primarily as a major film financier and distributor, the initiative represents a low-cost, fast-turnaround expansion strategy designed to monetize short-form IP across worldwide digital platforms.
