Kenneth Atchity, a longtime literary manager, author and film producer best known for developing the action thriller "The Meg," died on Monday, Variety reported. He was 82 years old.

Over the course of a multi-decade career across publishing and film, Atchity built a reputation as a bridge between prose writers and Hollywood studios. His producing track record spanned more than 30 motion pictures across both independent and studio pipelines.

In addition to producing, Atchity maintained a prolific writing career, authoring more than 20 books that often focused on storytelling mechanics, creative discipline and navigating the entertainment marketplace.

He expanded his literary footprint through Story Merchant Books, his private publishing imprint that brought hundreds of titles to market while functioning as an incubator for screen adaptations.

His most prominent commercial breakthrough arrived with "The Meg," the 2018 prehistoric shark feature adapted from Steve Alten's novel. Atchity spent years championing and packaging the property through prolonged development phases before it eventually crossed over into a major studio release.

## A Bridge Between Pages and Screens

Atchity belonged to an influential generation of reps who transformed literary representation into full-service producing. As Hollywood Tomorrow notes, his early packaging model anticipated today's fierce IP market, where literary managers routinely double as producers to protect and monetize intellectual property from the first manuscript draft.
