NBC is developing a new hourlong medical drama titled "Pops," with Kelsey Grammer attached to star and executive produce, according to a report from TheWrap. The broadcast project is set up at Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
Written by former "Chicago Med" co-executive producer Danny Weiss, the series centers on an older professional who pivots into the high-stakes realm of emergency medical services in his sixties. The narrative draws directly from the real-world experience of Ed Levien, a former advertising executive from Maryland who worked as an active EMT between the ages of 64 and 76 before stepping down last autumn.
Weiss and Levien are attached to executive produce alongside Grammer and Jordan McMahon under Grammer's Grammnet NH Productions banner, in association with 3 Arts Entertainment.
The development marks a potential return for Grammer to the network where he anchored primetime for over two decades. The actor portrayed Dr. Frasier Crane across "Cheers," "Wings" and "Frasier," picking up four of his five Primetime Emmy Awards during that run. On the feature side, Grammer is slated to appear in Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Doomsday," set for release this December.
Weiss, a former U.S. Marine, brings extensive procedural experience to the project after spending 10 seasons working on "Chicago Med," where he rose from staff writer to co-executive producer. His earlier television writing credits include Fox's "House, M.D." and CBS's "Battle Creek."
As Hollywood Tomorrow notes, linear broadcast networks remain heavily invested in occupational procedurals built around recognizable veteran leads. The late-career reinvention premise mirrors the formula that made ABC's "The Rookie" a durable multi-platform performer, giving NBC a familiar character engine tailored to older broadcast demographics.
Grammer is represented by UTA and Vault Entertainment. Weiss is repped by Echo Lake Entertainment and Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz.
