Norwegian filmmaker Jens Lien is preparing to tackle technological disruption and labor obsolescence in his upcoming feature, "Joe's Assignment," according to a report from Variety.
The near-future comedy re-teams Lien with actor Trond Fausa Aurvåg, best known internationally for Netflix's "Lilyhammer." Aurvåg previously starred in Lien's 2006 critical breakout "The Bothersome Man." Their new collaboration explores a society reshaped by automation, where human labor has become largely unnecessary and citizens are left without functional roles.
Lien has built a distinct profile around high-concept social satire. Alongside "The Bothersome Man," which earned critical recognition on the international festival circuit, he directed the HBO Nordic sci-fi series "Beforeigners," which examined modern refugee and cultural integration themes through the lens of time travel.
The project arrives as debates surrounding artificial intelligence, automation and workplace displacement continue to dominate corporate and creative sectors globally. European speculative comedies addressing labor alienation have historically found strong appeal among arthouse and streaming distributors looking for sharp, topical premises with crossover potential.
Production schedules and distribution partners for "Joe's Assignment" have not yet been disclosed, though the package brings together a proven creative team with an established record in European genre satire.
