Jake Reiner has spoken publicly for the first time regarding the December double murder of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Reiner, addressing the initial moments of the tragedy and the immense grief that followed.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the eldest son detailed receiving the urgent phone call from his sister, Romy, who had just discovered the crime scene at their parents' residence.
"Romy told me our dad was dead, and then she said, 'I can’t find mom,'" Reiner told The Hollywood Reporter. "I immediately went into shock."
The family tragedy deepened rapidly with the subsequent arrest of their younger brother, Nick Reiner, who remains incarcerated while awaiting trial on double murder charges.
"[Nick]’s in jail. It’s like, I physically lost my parents, and then Nick was arrested," Reiner said during the interview. "Now it’s just me and Romy, and we have to navigate this by ourselves essentially."
Reiner also spoke openly about the persistent anger he carries as he and his sister attempt to rebuild their lives in isolation from the family unit they once had.
The deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner sent shockwaves through the Hollywood creative community, where Rob Reiner stood for decades as an influential director, producer and advocate. With criminal proceedings against Nick Reiner still pending, the surviving siblings face the difficult task of handling unprecedented personal loss under intense public scrutiny.
