Over-the-counter healthcare sales surged to $58.2 billion in 2025, marking a substantial increase from $44.3 billion the previous year, according to reporting by Digiday. The commercial expansion is prompting pharmaceutical and wellness brands to overhaul their paid media models, increasingly borrowing tactics from the fast-moving consumer goods playbook.

The commercial growth aligns with broader institutional changes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has signaled an openness to clearing more prescription medications for non-prescription over-the-counter distribution. That shift, paired with elevated consumer interest in self-directed care, has expanded the reach of retail pharmacies and direct-to-consumer health operations.

Sandy Weag, client president at CMI Media Group, outlined the behavioral change driving the spend. "Historically, people relied more on their physicians," Weag told Digiday. "[Now] people are taking a much more proactive approach to their health, and are making product decisions as a shopper, similar as they would any other consumer product."

To capture that audience, healthcare advertisers are shifting budgets toward fast-paced retail media campaigns rather than relying solely on traditional clinical messaging. Paid media strategies now mirror standard consumer packaged goods rollouts, emphasizing point-of-sale visibility, digital retail networks and direct shopper engagement.

For entertainment networks and digital platforms reliant on ad revenues, Hollywood Tomorrow notes that the pivot offers a durable source of high-volume commercial spend. As wellness products behave more like household staples, healthcare media buying is diversifying away from specialized medical programming and into broader entertainment and streaming inventory.

With regulatory bodies continuing to review additional medication categories for over-the-counter transition, the convergence between healthcare advertising and everyday retail marketing is expected to accelerate across paid channels.
