Gloria Steinem, the pioneering activist, journalist, and co-founder of Ms. magazine who became one of the defining figures of the modern feminist movement, has died at the age of 92.
Her passing was announced via a joint social media post from her official account and The Gloria Steinem Foundation, which confirmed that she died peacefully at her residence in New York City while surrounded by loved ones, according to Deadline.
Steinem emerged as a nationally recognized voice for gender equality in the late 1960s and early 1970s. As a writer and public speaker, she pushed second-wave feminism into mainstream public discourse, advocating for workplace rights, reproductive autonomy, and systemic legal reforms.
In 1972, Steinem co-founded Ms. magazine, creating a groundbreaking commercial publishing platform operated by women. The publication defied prevailing media conventions of the era by directly addressing issues such as domestic abuse, wage disparities, and civil rights.
Steinem also maintained a significant footprint across film and television. Her life and writing served as the foundation for multiple documentaries, narrative projects, and theatrical productions, while her public advocacy frequently targeted equitable representation within the Hollywood studio system.
Arrangements and memorial plans have not yet been publicly disclosed by her representatives.
