Project re:Blue, a fan-led PC port of the 2006 console title Blue Dragon, is now available for modern PC players, Video Games Chronicle reported.

The original release served as a flagship title in Microsoft's mid-2000s push to gain market share in Japan. Developed by Mistwalker, the studio founded by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, the game brought together high-profile talent including Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama on character design and Nobuo Uematsu on the score.

Despite its pedigree, Blue Dragon remained locked to the Xbox ecosystem for nearly two decades. The new release operates as an unofficial conversion, allowing modern computer hardware to run the classic Japanese role-playing game without an Xbox 360 console.

Community ports have increasingly filled preservation gaps for seventh-generation console exclusives. While Microsoft maintains a backward compatibility program on its newer Xbox consoles, many legacy titles from the era never received native PC versions through official studio pipelines.

Such fan engineering efforts often occupy a tenuous space in the games industry. Publishers retain strict rights over their software catalogs, though companies vary widely in how aggressively they police non-commercial preservation projects versus issuing formal intellectual property takedowns.

Reported from the originating source.
