Andrew Lakeman, a former developer on the long-running MMORPG Old School RuneScape, has been sentenced following a multi-year legal inquiry into virtual asset theft, according to a report by Kotaku.

Lakeman, who operated inside the game community under the alias Mod Jed, faces up to three years behind bars. The legal conclusion follows a protracted investigation by law enforcement that began in 2019 after suspicious activity was flagged inside the game ecosystem.

Investigators determined that Lakeman abused his administrative access at studio developer Jagex to illicitly seize in-game gold and valuable items directly from player accounts. The total market valuation of the stolen virtual inventory was estimated at roughly half a million dollars.

To monetize the operation, Lakeman moved the illicit digital goods through unauthorized secondary markets and laundered the proceeds into cryptocurrency, attempting to hide the financial trail from both studio auditors and law enforcement.

The sentencing marks a rare criminal resolution for insider theft within virtual economies. As multiplayer titles maintain multi-million dollar secondary markets for digital goods, the case underscores the escalating legal risks studios face regarding internal access controls and the real-world financial stakes tied to virtual assets.
