Country music legend Dolly Parton intentionally kept her recent cancer diagnosis undisclosed because she did not want to cause distress to the public, her niece Jada Star revealed in an interview with Extra, as reported by TheWrap.

Parton died on Aug. 25 at the age of 80 following a brief illness. Despite continuing to work through her final months, the rapid progression of her condition left family members shocked when she was admitted to the hospital shortly before her passing.

Star explained that the entertainer made a deliberate decision to shield the public from her health crisis. "You know, we kind of kept all that stuff real private," Star said during the interview. "And so, she never wanted to worry anybody."

Describing the aftermath of Parton's death as surreal and challenging, Star noted that international tributes have provided solace to the family. Memorial recognitions have spanned from her Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, to the Empire State Building in New York City, which illuminated in pink to honor her legacy.

Star added that Parton preserved her disciplined work ethic until the end, remarking that her aunt would have instructed grieving relatives to dry their eyes, return to work, and support one another.

Parton's decision to maintain strict confidentiality surrounding her diagnosis reflects the careful boundary she maintained between her commercial empire and her personal life, allowing the prolific artist and entrepreneur to oversee her public narrative across seven decades in entertainment.
