Global cryptocurrency exchange Binance is assessing what could amount to the largest digital asset heist on record, following an unauthorized drain of capital estimated between $1.7 billion and $5.7 billion on Thursday afternoon.
Former company chief and co-founder Changpeng Zhao disclosed on social platform X that the platform appeared compromised, according to Axios. An official Binance spokesperson confirmed that internal security personnel are urgently evaluating the activity, though both Zhao and the exchange maintained that user balances remain intact.
To curb further leakage, Binance moved to restrict outbound user withdrawals. Concurrently, major stablecoin issuers Circle and Tether intervened by locking down more than $1 billion in digital tokens across relevant networks to limit total losses.
If verified at the upper valuation threshold, the incident would dwarf all prior cryptocurrency breaches. Speaking to Axios, JPEG Trading co-founder Kevin March described the market disruption as "unprecedented." By comparison, the previous high-water mark occurred earlier in 2025 when North Korea-linked actors siphoned roughly $1.5 billion from rival venue Bybit.
The breach caps a turbulent period labeled "Black October" by security monitors, characterized by severe intrusions and automated exploit discoveries across digital finance. For media conglomerates and entertainment firms exploring web3 integrations, digital licensing, and on-chain fan commerce, Hollywood Tomorrow notes that vulnerabilities at this scale present a stark reminder of systemic platform risks.
Binance has not yet identified the specific attack vector or confirmed the final total of compromised capital, with forensic reviews remaining active.
